Fear Itself: S1E07 "Community"

Our Fear Itself series continues over at The Avocado with Mary Harron’s Community. This is the kind of horror I’m really drawn to. I like deep dive psychological horror with style and great performances. It also gives me the chance to discuss gender bias in horror filmmaking. Morbid: The Seven Acolytes Review (PC Game, 2020)

Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is a new horror-themed Souls-like game on PC and console. You are the last survivor of your people. You are the only one left in the world with the skills to defeat the Seven Acolytes. These are incredibly power creatures with armies of monsters and demons working to destroy you and everyone else in this world.

Cat and Ghostly Road Review (PC Game, 2020)

Cat and Ghostly Road is a beautiful point-n-click adventure game available on PC. You play as a cat who has to save the spirit of its owner from a demon that stole it right out of his body. You cross through a painting into the spirit world where you interact with spirits, demons, and mythical creatures to solve puzzles and save your owner.

The new episode of Spookier Times is up and I went all in on the Cube series. Enjoy a deep dive on the entire trilogy: Cube, Cube 2: Hypercube, and Cube Zero. Topics include the appeal of the series, its portrayal of disabled characters, and its influence on contemporary horror. I also include an original piece of flash fiction inspired by game horror and recommendations for similar media to enjoy in films and games.

A Shoggoth on the Roof: The Investigation Review (Short Film, 2000) The Archives

In the 1980s, the HP Lovecraft Historical Society received a mysterious handwritten libretto for a parody musical called A Shoggoth on the Roof. That would be a Lovecraftian spin on A Fiddler on the Roof if you didn’t catch it. It turns out, the manuscript wasn’t just the creation of an off-kilter Lovecraft fan (actually institutionalized and unidentified in the documentary). His team came very close to producing the musical in 1979.
