Dragula Season Four Premieres 19 October
The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula season four has an official release date. As announced on their social media, the new season will premiere exclusively on Shudder starting 19 October 2021.
I’ve written about Dragula quite a bit here. I think it is one of the best competitive reality TV shows out there and the best drag reality show. The Boulet Brothers stack their casts in a way that make it seem like everyone could win. The season two premiere came down to one contestant landing in the bottom on the first challenge because the judges hated their shoes. We also know from interviews with previous contestants that the Boulet Brothers meet with every contestant in between episodes to give them guided feedback on what they’re specifically looking for. It’s how there’s such a wonderful mix of very connected, high budget drag performers and DIY, scraped this together from scraps contestants who make it deep into the contest.
The guest judges also offer great feedback to the contestants. The moment when Milly Shapiro (Hereditary) called out a contestant for having clean white tights under an otherwise blood-splattered costume lives rent-free in my head. Sure, everyone is leaning into the camp and horror for the cameras, but the commentary is on point. The Boulet Brothers will also reframe the comments or add on for clarification so the actual critique is clear.
I hope the Shudder partnership works well. I was so excited when Resurrection landed on Shudder because Shudder actually cares about promoting and supporting new horror content. Their original TV series are treated well and the interface of the site is just so easy to navigate. This feels like the perfect match of platform and content, especially since Shudder does not shy away from more extreme horror.
New episodes of Dragula will air at the same time on Tuesdays in all English-speaking territories.
