Horror Thursday: Circle
Yesterday, Horror Thursday returned to Man, I Love Films after a long and unexpected absence. That's the problem with recommending a super tech-heavy show for a high school you work for: you're committed to making sure all the bells and whistles go off properly. I basically had a five week tech period for a show and was getting home past 6PM EST (aka the time Horror Thursday goes live) for over a month. My schedule is clear now and I have a better understanding of the intensity of rehearsals under this new director. We work well together and the students are responding to his approach. That's all I care about. Circle is another of those deadly game films I'm so drawn to (like Battle Royale, or Death Parade, or Future Diary, or The Hunger Games, or Saw, or dozens of other examples). It's actually the second film this year I reviewed with a similar premise. 50 strangers (it was 80 in The Human Race) are dropped into a deadly game where the rules are never explained. Only one can survive. Aliens might be involved, but that's secondary to how people choose to value human life in a competition for survival. Circle takes it a step further and presents the entire story in one room.
