Games I Can't Stop Playing: August 2014

I've mostly not playing the same games from July in August. And by mostly, I mean I've been sucked down The Binding of Isaac rabbit hole, only now I'm good enough for a quick game to take 20 minutes before I die, not five.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! (PC)

Cook, Serve, Delicious

I'm playing a lot of Cook, Serve, Delicious! again. I like this kind of restaurant sim and I've figured out quite a few new strategies to do better than I did when I first played it. The key is to have a mix of slow and fast assembly foods and, at most, one nonsensical key binding item (like nachos or baked potatoes) with one that makes sense (like salad). I'm not earning money as quickly on this new run, but I have more happy customers.

Crypt of the Necrodancer (PC)

Crypt of the Necrodancer

I need to see if I can find a converter for my massive collection of PS/2/3 DDR dancepads so I can really get into Crypt of the Necrodancer. It is a rogue-like rhythm dungeon crawler played with the four arrow keys. You hit the steps in rhythm and automatically attack any enemies within range of your weapon. There is a dancepad mode and it's supposed to be incredible.

Chronology (PC)

Chronology

I don't know when my review of this beautiful and challenging puzzle game is going to pop up on GIZORAMA, but I praised it a lot. It is a time-bending indie puzzle/platformer where an inventor tries to restore the future to the luster of the past using a time machine and a sentient snail. The game is beautiful and the puzzles are very specific but fair.

Towerfall: Ascension (PS4)

Towerfall: Ascenscion

Am I any better at this throwback arcade/NES-style game than I was a month ago? Nope. Any forward progress has been through luck 100%. Still, it's a very fun game that you can keep going back to again and again.

Temple Run 2 (Mobile)

Speaking of replay value, I'm back on the Temple Run 2 train again. This came dangerously close to making my Game of the Year list when it was released. If it had all the features then that it does now, it easily would have ranked. It's a quick mobile game if you're not paying attention, or a massive time suck (in the best way possible) on the train or in the doctor's office if you focus and practice enough. Your call.
