Nicki Minaj on the Offensive (NSFW)
Almost a year ago, I wrote up a rather questionable song from Lil' Kim slamming Nicki Minaj. Here's what I said then:
The problem is this: it’s not a well-done track. Her lyrics are predictable bites against someone else...It’s tired. There is nothing new lyrically in the song.
Nicki Minaj has finally responded and the results are just as bad. Her new video is called "Stupid Hoe" and it's a mess. It's also completely Not Safe For Work. I'm serious. If you don't get caught by your boss for the content, you'll be caught for laughing at the video.
The track is strange. A drum machine is mixed with Nicki making an "ooh" sound (processed to death, naturally). There are some interesting rhythms in the track, but the barebones sound is unpleasant at best.
The best slam in the track is used in the opening of the song. I'll admit that it gave me hope for the rest of the song.
I’m Angelina, you Jennifer C’mon bitch, you see where Brad at
It's a play on popularity. Jennifer Aniston was the popular hero and then sympathetic victim at one point in the Aniston/Jolie/Pitt love triangle. Now she's occasionally popping up in tabloids to be accused of desperately needing a man while Jolie and Pitt grace magazine covers for their latest critically acclaimed feature. Lil' Kim is only appearing in the news when she slams Nicki Minaj, while Nicki Minaj gets press for her music and performance style.
Unfortunately, the rest of the song is biting on Lil' Kim for not being as beautiful as she once was. It's all about her appearance and that's shaky ground for Nicki. She has a personal style that lands her on the worst dressed lists all the time. People who get the joke like her style, but she's gaining a reputation as that crazy rapper with the weird costumes. This isn't helping.
The track is a shame because the video is quite exciting. It's random and explosive and visually interesting. I mean, where else is someone going to see an homage to Grace Jones, werecats, and Howdy Doody at the same time?
It's worth watching the video once--even if you have to mute it--to see the crazy visuals. Otherwise, this lead off single for her new album is a dud.
Thoughts? Love to hear them.
