I've come a long way regarding RuPaul's Drag Race. During Season 1, I mentioned it briefly, got the usual "why do you watch that reality trash?" response, and put it aside. During Season 2, I was a bit more aggressive in my approach, dedicating a couple posts to the show, but ultimately promising not to cover the show because people didn't get it. Now in Season 3, I'm over any insecurity about it. If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it, but I can guarantee you're missing out. Rich Juzwiak (of FourFour and VH1 blogs) did a series of interviews with RuPaul when VH1 started airing reruns of Drag Race. They are a fascinating look into the inner-workings of one of America's best known drag queens. From the decision to create the show, to the winners, to thoughts on politics, faith, and pop culture, nothing is left uncovered in these interviews. They are a testament to the wit and self-confidence of RuPaul, as well as Juzwiak's own ability to bring out the best in an interview.

While I recommend carving out the time to watch all of these videos, I'll leave you with the one that captures what I love about this show.

RuPaul's Drag Race isn't a show just for drag queens or gay people or [x] societal group; it is a show for pop culture lovers. If you know and enjoy the Golden Age of Hollywood, the classic 3 camera sitcoms, or even the best of cult cinema, you'll love this show. The challenges, catch-phrases, costumes, and even character personas are pulled from this pop culture stew that makes it relatable even if you've never had to step on a stage and perform in any capacity.
