American Mary Review (Film, 2013) The Archives

American Mary is a wild film. It’s a quiet character study of a poor medical student turned extreme body modifier. It’s a modern spin on Frankenstein with multiple Doctor/Monster connections. It’s a revenge/exploitation film from a distinctly feminist perspective with only one clear villain turned into an empathetic figure. It’s a freak-out gore film with very little blood and a social satire that points at the absurdity of human beauty standards without judging anyone for falling in line or rebelling against those standards of beauty.

The Platform Review (Film, 2020)

In The Platform, Goreng wakes up in a vertical prison. Each floor has two inmates and a giant hole in the floor and the ceiling. Once a day, a platform descends and stops on each floor for the prisoners to eat for two minutes. However, the food is only loaded in at the top of the prison tower. After floor one, everyone is eating leftovers. The floors are reassigned every month, and the lower floors portend certain death. Goreng tries to make sense of his situation while deciding how and if he can change the system.

Onward Review (Film, 2020)

Onward opens with a montage of historical high fantasy epics in the town. Flash forward to the present, and the town is still populated with high fantasy creatures. They just live like us in modern society. Ian, a shy elf, is celebrating his sixteenth birthday. He wants to be like his dad, who sadly passed away before he was born, but nothing seems to go his way. His mom surprises him with a gift from his dad, a wizard staff, intended to be given to him and his brother Barley when he turned 16. Their father wrote a spell to allow his sons to bring him back to life for one day. Sadly, the spell fails, and only the bottom half of their father is brought back.
