My writing process is a bit scattered, to be honest. I pick up and drop off on dozens of projects at a time, working on any one idea when it makes sense to work on it. This process has the benefit of making connections between work I didn’t necessarily notice before.

Holiday Spirits was not meant to be my next collection. I actually have a spring-themed collection a couple drafts away from completion. Scratch that—I had a spring-themed collection a couple drafts away from completion. When inspiration hit for a few new holiday horror stories, it suddenly made all the sense in the world to connect a few of my favorite stories into my greater vision of a Victorian-styled Christmas ghost story.

Holiday Spirits explores the sense of dread that can come with the winter holidays in America. From the isolation of long, cold nights to the continuous obligation to gather and celebrate more weeks than not as we race towards the start of a New Year, the holidays can become a great source of fear. Throughout the journey of prose and verse, Holiday Spirits challenges its protagonists and its reader alike to discover their own purpose while the rest of the world seems to force us to deprioritize our own existence in the season of giving.
