I realize that I basically used charcoal like pastels--layering color and smudging/erasing until I got it right. That's why I'm starting to transition to soft pastels. Today is a nice little gray gradient set I picked up with six shades from white to black. I figured Claude Raines' Invisible Man was a nice match for the supplies.
