No, we're not getting a Spider-Gwen movie. Could it be any worse than the pointless Spider-Man reboot that's leading to another reboot? Not a chance, and not just because those films were so lackluster.
No, Spider-Gwen as a character is very interesting. The Spider-Man universe at large dealt with a whole lot of alternate universes the past few years. This Spiderverse includes alternate timelines and dimensions. In a small number of them, Spider-Man or his equivalent has always been a woman. Sometimes, it's a variant of Silk or Spider-Woman. But in one glorious alternate timeline, it's Gwen Stacy.
Gwen Stacy is canonically Peter Parker's first girlfriend. She's also fridged in a particular brutal manner to give Peter Parker more motivation to fight as Spider-Man. He tries to save her when she falls from a bridge, but actually snaps her neck instead. It's just terrible.
The nicest thing I can say about the Andrew Garfield/Emma Stone-led Spider-Man films is that they didn't last long enough to film this particular story. It was certainly threatened in negotiations, with those will they or won't they rumors of bringing in Mary Jane Watson because Emma Stone dared to negotiate a higher salary.
Spider-Gwen received a limited run series starting last February during the massive Marvel reboot that smashed alternate universes together to leave one set standing. The five issues created by writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez (with colors by Rico Renzi) were a lot of fun. They also sold well enough for Spider-Gwen to be picked up as an ongoing series starting next month.
To hold you over, New York Magazine spliced together a lot of Emma Stone films to create a trailer for the Spider-Gwen film of our dreams. Well, except for including those nausea-inducing first person CGI-NYC action sequences from the reboot. They're always a nightmare.
