Coming Soon: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game @TXChainSawGame
content warning: blood, gore
Last night was The Game Awards. This is a newer, juried awards ceremony recognizing the best in video games as voted on by a mix of media outlets and influencers who actively engage with games criticism.
My new most anticipated game was announced live during the streaming ceremony. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tobe Hooper’s critically acclaimed independent slasher film from 1974, is being adapted into a multiplayer horror game by Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham. The trailer captures the intense level of detail in the house and the hazy cinematography that transports you to an alternate reality while watching.
If you’ve been here long enough, you know Sketching Details is, as per editorial policy, a fan of Tobe Hooper. His brand of horror exploring and deconstructing the idea of the all-American family through intercultural conflicts is terrifying.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre sees a core group of young people from a more progressive area travel into a far more insular, isolated, and conservative area of Texas. They already stand out for not acting or dressing like everyone else they meet. Then they run into the close-knit Sawyer family, a self-sufficient group that will use their skills at hunting and butchering to make sure they have food on the table no matter what. The fallout is one of the most intense and brutal slasher films ever created.
The other major reason I’m excited by this news is the developer. Gun Interactive are the creators of Friday the 13: The Game. This was one of the most entertaining multiplayer horror games to ever come out. It had a huge community of people around the world roleplaying their way through Camp Crystal Lake as they conspired to kill Jason, hide until morning, or drive off after repairing a vehicle to escape with.
I have total confidence that Gun Interactive know how to make a multiplayer horror game work. Sumo Nottingham also have a long history of successful game development, ranging from co-developing the Hitman series to one of my favorite adventure games of all time: Doctor Who: The Adventure Games.
Here’s what we know about the game so far. This is a multiplayer horror game adapted from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The key art shows off Leatherface, The Hitchhiker, and The Cook (Drayton Sawyer). The game will be bloody and gory, as the trailer shows off one unfortunate young person about to meet his end on the meat hook. The game is leaning into the “based on true events” angle the original film used in marketing.
We do not have a release date for the game yet. It will be coming to PC and ninth generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series S/X). You can follow the game on Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook @TXChainSawGame.
I know that I’ll be picking the game up the first chance I get.
Check out the trailer below to see why thousands of horror fans started cheering last night at the same time.
