Slipstream #10: Genre @NYCC + #NYCCSwag Winners

New York Comic Con was a great experience last weekend. That massive convention has never been that organized before and it's only going to get better. Reed Pop Entertainment just needed a run through to get the hitches out of their new RFID system (and, you know, not hijack people's Twitter accounts with spam messages about how amazing NYCC is) and it's going to make a big difference. The new episode of Slipstream is up. I take a look at my five favorite pulp culture/genre happenings at the convention. From an unbelievable booth to some stunning small scale artwork, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy were represented well at NYCC 2013. Also, the winners of the #NYCCSwag contest are announced, as well. Click through for all the behind the scenes details.

  • The things I could tell you about the new She-Hulk comic will amaze you; too bad I can't reveal most of that info. By chance, I sat near some Women of Marvel at the Women of Marvel panel and the ones not on the panel let a few little sneaky details slip they probably weren't supposed to. She-Hulk could be the new stand-out title.
  • Had I not been cosplaying this weekend, I would have signed up for The Walking Dead makeup experience just to pick up some new techniques. I watched a little bit here and there and was amazed by the level of detail they were putting on what was essentially a promotional opportunity.
  • FEARnet is always one of those booths you want to hang out at if they're at your local con. Great staff and great conversation, just like the CBLDF team.
  • I cannot stress how great it is to wander around The Block at NYCC. Most conventions have an Artist's Alley situation; this one has a pop up art gallery for some really talented pop culture and street art-fused artists. I lost hours just wandering around, booth to booth, chatting with artists and trading ideas and techniques.
  • Katrina Catizone's work really blew me away. The scope was so small on what she was selling--the original art and the prints are 8.5x11 in this style (she has larger canvas work, as well)--but it felt larger than life. She gets such an incredible amount of detail on a brown paper bag.
  • The winners of the contest are Jean from YouTube and Hope from Facebook. I'll be in touch shortly. I'm pretty sure you both popped up from the Regretsy forums from the timing of the entries, though one of you might be from the Geek & Sundry forums.

As always, you can subscribe to Sketchy Details @YouTube for more great video content. Saturday's new episode of The Haunting Ground is going to be all about jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin design. You still have time to steal the show on Halloween night with some impressive (but so easy) carving techniques.
