Yes, there is going to be a new version of the 3DS coming soon. In Japan, it's releasing next week. There's no set release date for America, but it's coming. First, the 3DS is getting a redesign. There's a second analog stick on the right and a second set of shoulder buttons in the back. The screens are larger on the regular and XL sizes and the battery life is better.
Second, the 3D feature itself is getting tweaked. Nintendo has found a way to increase the viewing angles. Maybe you can finally play in 3D without getting dizzy or building some kind of proprietary stand to keep the console at just the right angle, height, and distance for the effects to work.
Third, the New 3DS (sigh, that is the title for now) will be backwards compatible, but will also receive console exclusive games. Meaning, you will eventually have a chance of picking up a new 3DS game and discovering it was actually a new New 3DS game. This is mostly going to be for those lovely interactive Amiibo figures and accessories Nintendo is banking on.
Fourth, the newest information reveals customization options. Nintendo is banking on that cellphone case market to sell interchangeable plates for the New 3DS. I'm not going to lie; using Kyary to sell the interchangeable plates makes me want them. It's just so cute and presumably a lot cheaper than buying a new 3DS (or a new New 3DS) every time Nintendo releases a custom design.
