Monster Train: The Last Divinity Review (DLC, 2021)

Monster Train: The Last Divinity Review (DLC, 2021)

Monster Train, the roguelike deck building game where you’re on a mission to reignite the fire that sustains hell, has received it’s first paid DLC related to a new class of characters. The new clan is the Wurmkin and they are gamechangers.

Wurmkin are all about buffing your forces with Charged Echoes. Cards that are Infused add Charged Echoes to a floor. These echoes activate different powers and abilities that can help you and hurt your foes. For example, adding Reap to an enemy will cause them to take one damage for every Charged Echo you have on the floor. Adding Inspire will trigger an effect (like adding attack power or armor) when you gain Charged Echoes. The list goes on.

This is one of the most adaptable clans in the game. Choosing Wurmkin as your Main or Allied clan will add Infused cards throughout your deck. The only drawback to the clan is having to spend more time reading the effects on a card as you want to be sure you don’t pass on an awesome Charged Echoes-based effect because you’re used to the card doing something different.

That isn’t to say the class is overpowered. It’s easier than ever to misplay in Monster Train because of these Wurmkin effects. Many of the cards require a sacrifice to gain the benefit. This could be health, other characters, resources, or time. Get too confident and you’ll have an empty train car and no way to stop your pyre from being decimated by the enemy.

The Last Divinity also adds in new random encounters in the Concealed Caverns, new boss spawns, and a whole lot of balance updates to the game. The strategies you used before on enemies that have been in the game since launch aren’t going to work quite the same anymore.

Monster Train is one of the most balanced card games I’ve ever encountered. It’s pretty impressive that they’ve managed to create 120 deck options (1 of 12 Champions times 1 of 10 Ally options) that feel balanced. Just because I’m not the best at mixing Umbra with Wurmkin doesn’t mean that combination is bad; it just doesn’t match how I strategize in the game.

Monster Train: The Last Divinity DLC is available on PC and Xbox One/Series S/X.
