Sean Durkin, the man behind one of my favorite films from last year Martha Marcy May Marlene, has been hired by Morgan Creek to adapt William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist into a TV series. I've come out as not being a big fan of The Exorcist because of the pacing. I think the novel has more time to develop the nuances of these crises of faith that become rather black and white on film. If you don't get to feel for the characters, you just might not care.
The TV show sounds like a good idea. A ten episode series could really dig into the novel with plenty of time for character development. Durkin did great things with slowly developing character, plot, and suspense in Martha Marcy May Marlene until it was almost unbearable to watch. That's what The Exorcist needs to succeed.
Whether or not the show is even picked up at this point is unknown. Vulture reports network inquiries, but that's never a guarantee. I'm on board if it happens for real.
