If you don’t know, Kindle Vella is a new platform for serialized stories. Authors release their work chapter by chapter. The first three chapters of every story are totally free. After that, additional chapters can be unlocked with tokens. You can buy the tokens in bundles that roughly cost one cent per token, and one token unlocks about 100 words. So if a new chapter of a story has 3000 words, you’d unlock it with 30 tokens.
There’s a cool social media vibe to the platform that drew me to it. You can Thumbs Up stories to help boost them in the store. Every week you unlock stories, you receive one Fave. You can add that Fave to any story you read to also boost the rankings. You can still rate and review stories like you would any other book on Amazon, but the Thumbs Up and Fave system is what drives the algorithm.
As an author, I like the challenge of putting out a piece of serialized fiction. It is a different format from a traditional novel and it’s one I’m more comfortable exploring. Sketching Details largely focuses on horror, sci-fi, and fantasy media, but my own academic studies largely focused on 19th and early 20th century literature (Victorian literature, Realism, and Modernism, to be specific).
I’m excited to share what I have planned for CJ and their growing business in this format. When I finish publishing Extra Intent, I can compile it into a more traditional novel format 60 days later per the Kindle Vella TOS. That doesn’t mean that Kindle Vella is the only place that Extra Intent’s growing market will reach.
