Extra Intent: Episode 2: "The Cost of Business" Available Now
Extra Intent is my serialized paranormal horror/weird fiction novel about an artist’s new business ventures. In the first episode, CJ Brown learned that there is a healthy online marketplace for authentic haunted objects. Now, they’re learning the true cost of overnight success.
You can read Episode 2: “The Cost of Business” for free now on Kindle Vella. This is Amazon’s new serialized novel platform. Authors can release their work episodically and readers can enjoy the first three episodes for free.
After that, you need to invest in tokens to keep reading the book. Each token covers 100 words and tokens cost about $.01 each. You can get 200 tokens for $1.99, 525 tokens for $4.99, 1100 tokens for $9.99, or 1700 tokens for $14.99. To put it in perspective, a 50000 word novel—about the average length of a traditional novel—would cost about 500 tokens, or about $4.99. Amazon also has offers available for first time users. I’m not sure what is being offered right now, but I know that I received 300 tokens for free just for checking out Kindle Vella as a reader for the first time last month.
There’s a great social media aspect to Kindle Vella that led me to publish Extra Intent this way. If you like a story, you can give it a Thumbs Up. This helps the visibility of the story in the marketplace. You can also fave the stories to make it easier to keep track of your reading and also help the story rise in the rankings. The marketplace is broken up into a lot of clear sub-genres and tags, so you can easily find stories suited to your interests. And with the ability to read the first three chapters of any story for free, you can try any book out before you commit tokens to it.
Then there’s my inner Dickensian. Charles Dickens was one of my early literary obsessions and his writing certainly had a formidable influence on my own approach to longer narrative structure. I’m enjoying the challenge that he faced with his own work, releasing long form narratives episodically on a set schedule. I’m aiming for one chapter a month until the novel is complete. At that point, I can compile it into a standalone novel for sale on all digital platforms after 60 days.
