Slipstream #8: American Horror Story and You!

In anticipation of season 3 of American Horror Story, I breakdown how series creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's everything but the kitchen sink approach to horror actually works. Watch the video, then click through for all the behind the scenes gossip.

  • I filmed this while incredibly sick. I haven't had sinus issues this bad in years. I knew what I wanted to say but my body wasn't cooperating. I'm very pleased with how it turned out considering this.
  • On the plus side, my new camera came in and it was glorious. It's the upgraded version of my last camera that stopped accepting batteries. Toshiba said "No problem" and gave me a huge credit for the original MSRP of a camera I bought that was on the verge of being clearanced out. Great customer service.
  • American Horror Story is probably my favorite modern TV show. It's just so wild with the cliches and tropes. It's everything I loved about Popular and Nip/Tuck applied to good old fashioned horror/exploit storytelling. Nothing says America like exorcisms, religious horror, and exploitation/grindhouse pictures.
  • I might actually prefer Murder House to Asylum. Asylum had everything I could hope for, but Murder House exceeded my expectations. It had me at the crying happy times in the pilot episode.
  • I can't wait to see what the new cast members bring to the show. Kathy Bates has a title card, so she's going to have a larger supporting role. Gabby Sidibe does not get a title card but she is clearly recognizable in the opening sequence. I have a feeling their storylines might cross because of the role Kathy Bates is playing.
  • I want to see how far Murphy/Falchuk are going to go with Voodoo. Witchcraft is well-represented in the American horror pantheon; Voodoo fell out of favor in the late 1940s and never really returned to American genre pictures. There's so much potential if it's handled right. Very rich history and iconography.

After that, Slipstream is going to focus in more on convention coverage through late November. I have NYCC, then Chiller Theatre Expo, then the first ever Geek Creation Show where I'm presenting a panel on Halloween. Tickets are available now.
